A statewide $3.5 million appliance rebate program to help consumers purchase more energy-efficient models will begin April 22, in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.
Oklahoma's version will coincide with surrounding states' programs, said Vaughn Clark , director of community development for the Oklahoma Department of Commerce .

The Climate Quilt Campaign is an international initiative to encourage youth worldwide to get involved with protecting the environment.
It was recently on display In Copenhagen, and now it is headed back to the US for Earth Day.
Students around the world have designed "pledge patches" from recycled materials with their own individual promise telling how they will preserve the future of the planet.
In some schools the students were given a swatch of recycled fabric and sewed a circle in the center to represent the earth.

The New River Earth Day Committee and Fayette County Green Advisory Team are preparing for the fifth annual New River Earth Day celebration.
This year's event is slated to run from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 24 on Court Street and the Fayette County Courthouse lawn.
Event-goers are invited to bring family members and learn about recycling/composting, alternative energy, water conservation, sustainability and reducing an individual's ecological footprint.

PBS counts down to the 40th anniversary of Earth Day with new and encore programming leading up to Thursday, April 22, 2010.
New programming this week includes EARTH DAYS: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE (4/19).
Director Robert Stone ("Oswald's Ghost," "Guerrilla: The Taking of Patty Hearst") traces the origins of the modern environmental movement through the eyes of nine Americans who propelled the movement from its beginnings in the 1950s to its moment of triumph in 1970 with the original Earth Day and to its status as a major political force in America.
